Here's the most important thing I learned in four years of therapy...
Five years ago, I was asked for a divorce.
I moved back in with my parents, shell-shocked.
I started therapy four-and-a-half years ago, to try to find answers.
The answer was that I had serious depression.
💙
I've been working on healing that depression and anxiety ever since, and today I consider myself free from depression, despite therapy happening at the same time as...
- going through the divorce.
- my mum getting ovarian cancer and passing on.
- my dad passing on a year later of a broken heart.
- caring for both of them while they got sick.
- two funerals, two probates and securing myself a place to live.
💙
My therapist once asked me what was the biggest lesson I'd got from therapy.
I said, "awareness".
Without awareness of your thoughts, feelings, impulses and beliefs, you have nothing to work on.
When we're feeling "stuck", we can be quite self-critical, and that can lead to depression.
Having awareness allows us to see the path to becoming "unstuck".
So where does awareness come from?
It comes from being mindful.
It comes from learning mindfulness.
That's why I've created an online course called, "Mindfulness for Depression and Anxiety".
It explains what mindfulness is, how it helped me with my depression, and how it could potentially help you.
I consider mindfulness to be the bedrock on which my recovery from depression was built.
If you're "stuck", you could be at risk of depression. The earlier you can learn ways to deal with depression, the better.
I was depressed for probably 20 years, getting steadily worse, and it contributed to my divorce.
