Welcome To Epicentering!

Hello and welcome to Epicentering. I'm Dr. Neil Shearing and on this website I've created tools to help people who are struggling with long-term stress, burnout, depression and anxiety.

I personally suffered with all of those things, especially depression, which got worse and worse over many, many years.

It was only when my life fell apart that I realised I had to try to understand what was going wrong for me.

I sought out therapy, and I have been going to therapy now for five years.

As my brain started to awaken from depression, and because of my previous scientific training (I have a PhD in breast cancer research from the University of Dundee) my curiosity started to come back online.

I wanted to understand what had gone wrong for me, and also what actually worked to recover from depression and anxiety.

I came to see that lifestyle changes could actually help pull me out of the black hole I was in. So I did self-directed learning: I read numerous books, research papers, blog posts, and listened to podcasts endlessly.

Over time, I assimilated a huge amount of information, because depression, anxiety, chronic stress and burnout all overlap to a certain degree. In fact, it wasn't until I started recovering from depression and reconnecting with my feelings that I was hit very hard by anxiety, and that then became something to integrate into the whole idea and concept of Epicentering.

What Epicentering Offers

Epicentering is about what people can do for themselves in order to feel better, rebuild their lives, calm their nervous systems, and recover from stress, burnout, depression and anxiety.

I want to say clearly that although I have scientific training and personal lived experience of chronic stress, burnout, depression and anxiety, I am not a psychologist and I am not a psychiatrist.

Therefore, what I offer at Epicentering is educational advice, not medical advice.

If you think you suffer from any kind of medical condition, or if you are in a mental health emergency, it is essential that you seek out qualified medical professionals.

Epicentering is additional support and educational guidance based on my experience of going through these things and recovering from depression, anxiety, stress and burnout.

Ways To Connect With Epicentering

There are several ways we can connect, depending on what level of support you are looking for.

This is a free course where I send you one lesson a day via email, designed to help calm your nervous system and support better sleep.

I chose sleep as a starting point because it is almost universally affected when people struggle with stress, burnout, depression and anxiety.

Sleep is also one of the 12 courses within Epicentering, and the Seven Day Sleep Reset contains elements from the full Epicentering sleep course.

The Full Epicentering Programme

In total, I created 12 comprehensive Epicentering courses. These cover sleep, stress, support, nutrition, nature, timelines, rhythms, movement, mindfulness, thoughts, feelings and beliefs: 12 in total, with 313 lessons and almost 36 hours of content.

This is material I believe is essential for building a deep, sustained and grounded recovery from stress, burnout, depression and anxiety.

It's about changing your life: not continuing the same patterns that led you into difficulty, but doing things differently so you can experience life more fully, reconnect with your feelings, reduce anxiety, and reconnect with your friends, family, work and the things you enjoy.

It's incredibly powerful to be on the other side of depression and anxiety.

I worked intensively for around six months creating these courses, based on the insights I gathered through four and a half years of therapy and self-directed exploration of the root causes of stress, burnout, depression and anxiety.

You can access all 12 courses as a single online programme and work through them at your own pace as self-help, either alongside therapy or alongside support from qualified professionals. Because it is online, you can start immediately and study in a way that feels right for you.

One To One Coaching

Finally, if you would like more personalised support, I offer a 12-week one-to-one coaching programme. During this, we work through one Epicentering course per week to support nervous system regulation and help you rebuild your life in a more grounded and sustainable way.
